Sweden v. Israel: game, set and match

The weekend of 6-8 March 2009 is something of a turning-point in history.

It marks the date when Israel met Sweden in the Davis Cup tennis tournament in the southern Swedish city of Malmö.

Two teams played. There was one victor, but two losers.

After a hard-fought and generally very evenly matched contest on the tennis court, Israel won the series 3-2. But it really could have gone either way, both teams put up a magnificent fight.

But there were two losers. Firstly, the Swedish Davis Cup team, despite a great showing and spirited playing.

And secondly, what is quickly emerging as the fading democracy of Sweden – the even bigger loser.

“In my opinion, there should be no question of Sweden playing a match against Israel at all…”

Radical left-wing Malmö mayor Ilmar Reepalu

Ilmar Reepalu is mayor of Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city where Muslims make up almost 30 percent of the population. While the event was still in the planning stages, Mayor Reepalu made it clear that he did not want Jews from Israel in his city. He quoted “security concerns” – despite being told by the police that this was never going to be a problem.

Mr Reepalu then changed tack: “In my opinion, there should be no question of Sweden playing a match against Israel at all bearing in mind the situation (Israel’s 21-day operation in Gaza in response to 2920 days of Palestinian missile barrages on Israeli civilians)”. He went on to clarify his stance: “This is just not a tennis match against any old country. This is a match against the State of Israel.”

Mayor Reepalu appeared determined to set Sweden’s foreign policy in Malmö. The Swedish government in the country’s capital city, Stockholm, appeared to be completely sidelined by the brazen takeover of the nation’s foreign policy agenda.

At Malmö Town Hall the city council decided to make a very public issue of out its political stance, with radical left-wing parties winning the vote 5-4 to ban spectators from the venue as a means of persuading the Israeli team to abandon its plans to play at all.

The Israeli team turned up nonetheless. And won.

Sweden lost. It lost its chances of advancing in the Davis Cup tournament.

Sweden also lost its reputation as a democracy – like the Palestinians who seem uncertain as to whether their government is in Gaza City or Ramallah, Swedes no longer know whether their government’s foreign policy is set in Stockholm or Malmö.

And Sweden lost financially: with spectators banned by a city mayor keener to play foreign-policy demagogue than local civic leader, Malmö lost revenue from ticket sales, hotel and restaurant turnover, bus and taxi earnings.

And then had to foot the bill for mounting a multi-million kronor security operation the likes of which had never been seen in this country. One thousand police officers drafted in to maintain law and order, upwards of one hundred police vehicles involved.

Did they succeed? The police security cordon was impenetrable. I witnessed several attempts in the hours before and during the tennis games to breach security, and none succeeded. Game, set and match to the police, then.

But at what cost? The photographs and film images show a fraction of the damage caused by the largely Muslim rioters aided and abetted by radical left-wing saboteurs.

The rioters were first warmed up with firebrand speeches by the likes of Swedish Socialist (nee Communist) MP Lars Ohly sporting a keffiyeh showing a map WITHOUT the state of Israel and talking about the Jewish nation’s “crimes against humanity”. He was referring to Israel’s 21-day response after suffering an onslaught of 10,000 missiles from Gaza. The results were predictable. Violent riots, attempts to set police vehicles alight – with the officers sitting inside them – the use of granite paving-stones to try and smash the police vehicles and their occupants. The financial cost is going to suck the city of Malmö dry for years to come.

Malmö city mayor Ilmar Reepalu seems unaware of the worldwide recession. From somewhere in his already depleted coffers he is now going to have to foot the bill for the repairs – after first losing out on the revenue from a tennis tournament which went ahead anyway despite his sabotage attempts.

And to round it all off, Malmö has now ended up on the international list of pariahs – a city in which no self-respecting organisation is ever going to hold a major event for risk of running aground on the whims of its mayor’s agenda of the day.

So many achievements in a few short days for the Mayor Who Would Be King.

Sweden wins match but loses credibility

Sweden’s economy is in the doldrums. It’s a fate Sweden shares with many other nations in what is turning into the worst financial crisis in decades.

However, two industries are doing very well indeed:

1. Hate dissemination. The extreme left, the extreme right and the more violent Islamist movements are allied to what the Swedes, with comical euphemism, refer to as “autonomous groups” – a synonym for anarchists, violent saboteurs of civilised society. It’s an unholy alliance that is raking in the profits in Sweden. The political profits.

2. Transport. A handful of Jews from Israel arrived in Sweden to play tennis in the Davis Cup tournament, and a thousand police officers and several scores of police vehicles had to be transported down to the southern Swedish city of Malmö to protect the Jews. Why? Because this handful of Jewish tennis players also attracted about 6000 violent demonstrators from all over Sweden and northern Europe, particularly nearby Denmark, all of whom required transport to Malmö.

So what were the demonstrations in Malmö about on Saturday 7 March? Well, they certainly weren’t about human rights abuses in Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Syria, the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, Fatah’s West Bank, Lebanon, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Russia, Burma.

The demonstrations were against the enormity of allowing a handful of Jews onto Swedish soil to play tennis. Because the police, in particularly unsportsmanlike fashion, erected barricades and refused to let the demonstrators tear the Jewish tennis players limb from limb, the mob turned its attention on the hapless officers. Sitting inside their vehicles, the police were subjected to what could only have been a truly terrifying rampage as fireworks, granite cobblestones, even bicycles, were hurled at them and the rioters started tearing the vehicles apart.

I spoke before and after the tennis match with police officers, civilian security guards, passersby, fans of both the Swedish and the Israeli teams, and representatives of the Israeli team. Everyone expressed their disapproval of the demonstrators’ goals, their methods and the damage they caused to Sweden’s and in particular Malmö’s reputation.

I met a number of very pleasant police officers from my home town of Gothenburg, about a 3-hour drive away. They all said the police were thoroughly prepared and that nothing would disrupt the match. They were right – because they themselves bore the brunt of the attack by the rioters.

All the police and functionaries I spoke with noted that Sweden’s reputation, economy and sports industry and the city of Malmö’s future as a host of international events have taken a severe beating – just like the city itself.

The Israeli team members expressed their astonishment over the situation. One player said that they travel the world playing tennis, including the Middle East, but that nowhere have they ever encountered the sort of hatred and naked anti-Semitism that they witnessed in Sweden.

Another player said that one might have an opinion on the policies of countries such as China, Russia, Dubai, Turkey, countries about which there is some controversy regarding human-rights issues and political freedom, but that one leaves politics behind when the time comes to play tennis.

Another team member who understands Arabic pointed out that the protests did not appear to be political in nature but instead racist. He did not understand how Sweden, previously a renowned beacon of freedom and democracy, could accept being taken hostage by what looked like race riots.

Violence against the police. The police were apparently under instruction to do nothing to “provoke” even more violence while under attack. It appears that the only major action taken by the police was to drive a few police vans forward a few metres, sirens blaring, and to use the mounted police to single out the worst offenders. According to information the police took about a hundred rioters into temporary custody, releasing them at a remote location away from the centre of the city.

That was yesterday. Tomorrow perhaps it will not be the police who are targeted, perhaps it will be the civilians who will feel the full weight of the rioters’ rage.

Hopefully if that happens the police will respond more robustly.

After the match I chatted with a few Swedish tennis fans, young enthusiasts in their early 20s. One of them was immensely upset over Sweden’s loss. Not quite sure if I’d misunderstood what he said, I pointed out that Sweden had in fact won the doubles match. “Yeah well, we won the match but we lost everything else,” he said, pointing to what looked like a war zone beyond the crowd control barricades, the hundreds of police in riot gear, the dozens of civilian security personnel and the scores of police vehicles. “We’re supposed to call this winning?” he asked. “Sweden lost big-time. Tennis lost its reputation. And as for this damned city, I’m never setting my foot here again.”

A functionary standing nearby nodded without saying a word. The battle-weary police nearby looked like all they wanted to do was to go back home to their families in faraway towns and cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg and points further afield. A few of them undoubtedly came locally, from Malmö. I felt most sorry for them – it’s never pleasant hearing your home-town being trashed in public.

But it is difficult to talk about victory on a day like this. How could Sweden lose in such a spectacular way? The answers are to be found in the left-wing politicians who fired up the 6000-strong demonstrators, turning them into rioters.

Swedish politicians Lars Ohly and Per Gahrton are the flip side of an increasingly fragile Swedish democracy. Populists who know how to use words to inflame a crowd on the day the country’s Davis Cup team won but the nation lost.

Big-time.

Sverige förlorade i Malmö

Sveriges ekonomi är körd i botten. Det är ett öde vårt land delar med många andra länder som genomgår den värsta finansiella krisen på många decennier.

Men två industrier går alldeles lysande i dessa tider:

1. Hatmångleri. Den yttersta vänstern, den yttersta högern och de våldsammare islamistiska rörelserna går samman i skön – om än smaklöst ohelig – förening och gör alla storvinster i dagens klimat. Lars Ohly, Per Gahrton och Ilmar Reepalu borde känna sig riktigt rika idag.

2. Transportnäringen. Dels för att till Malmö igår transporterades ett tusen poliser och flera dussin polisfordon från när och fjärran i vårt rike. Och dels för att när en handfull israeler kommer till vårt land för att spela tennis, strömmar tusentals människor till Malmö för att protestera mot … ja, mot vad, exakt?

På plats i Malmö lördagen den 7 mars var det svårt att veta vad de protesterade mot. De protesterade i alla fall inte mot brott mot de mänskliga rättigheterna i Sudan, Saudiarabien, Iran, Egypten, Syrien, Hamas Gazaremsan, Fatahs Västbanken, Libanon, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kina, Ryssland, Burma.

Däremot var det lättare att veta vad de protesterade för: de protesterade för rätten att krossa demokratin Sverige, de protesterade för rätten att attackera tennisspelare från världens enda judiska land, de protesterade för rätten att ge sig på poliser inlåsta i sina polisfordon. Just hur skrämmande det måste ha varit att omges av tusentals rasande våldsman som slog sönder plåt- och glasfängelset poliserna satte i kan man knappast föreställa sig.

Både före och efter tennismatchen pratade jag med poliser, civila ordningsvakter, förbipasserande, fans ur den lilla samlade publiken, tennisförbundets representanter och spelare. Alla uppvisade en total oförståelse för demonstranternas mål, deras medel och den skada de orsakat Sveriges och speciellt Malmös rykte.

Jag träffade en del mycket trevliga poliser från Göteborg som före matchen var vid gott mod och försäkrade att polisens förberedelser var så starka att inget skulle ha minsta chans att störa matchen. Vilket visade sig vara sant – för de själva fick ta hela smällen från uppemot 6000 rasande demonstranter.

Alla poliser och funktionärer jag talade med sade att samhället, ekonomin, idrotten, Sveriges anseende och Malmös framtid som evenemangsstad allvarligt har skadats. Många jag talade med hänvisade till att utrikespolitik vanligtvis bedrivs i Rosenbad i Stockholm, inte Rosengård i Malmö.

Jag ville ha lite mer än detta, så jag stängde av mina kameror och stoppade undan mitt anteckningsblock. Då uttrycktes mycket starka fördömanden av Malmös Ilmar Reepalu (någon kallade honom en rödbrun dinosaurie). Och av beslutet att låta idrotten kapas och tas som gisslan av människor som främjar sina egna politiska ambitioner via Malmös stads förlorade inkomster och via Sveriges skyhöga kostnader för skyddsoperationen – och nu kostnaden för den omfattande skadegörelsen.

Det israeliska laget uttryckte sin bestörtning över situationen. En spelare förklarade att man åker överallt i världen för att spela tennis, inklusive i arabvärlden. Men ingenstans har de mött ett så massivt motstånd, ett så klart uttryckt hat och en så öppen antisemitism som här i Sverige.

En annan spelare sade att man kan ha olika åsikter om politik i till exempel Kina, Ryssland, Dubai, Kroatien, länder om vilka det i världssamfundet bland annat råder stor oenighet beträffande de mänskliga rättigheterna och politiska frihet, men att man ställer politik utanför dörren när man kommer in för att spela tennis.

En lagmedlem poängterade att protesterna inte hade karaktären av politiska åsikter utan rent rasistiska hot. Han förstod inte hur Sverige, tidigare ett föredöme när det gäller frihet och demokrati, kunde acceptera att stillatigande hållas som gisslan medan man först hotar med och sedan verkställer raskravaller. Han undrande vem som hade den egentliga makten i landet – regeringen och polisen, eller politiska ytterlighetsgrupperingar som arbetade i maskopi med de etablerade medierna.

Den kommentaren förstår man lite bättre när man i de olika medierna läser vilka skönmålningar som framkommit. DN t ex skriver om ”Stökigt slut på lugn protest mot matchen”. Stökigt? Jag var där. Det var regelrätta kravaller i rashetsens namn.

En annan lagmedlem lade till att i en värld där politik tvingar isär människor bör idrott agera som brobyggare för att förena, för någonstans måste man mötas om det ska finnas minsta chans för att tillsammans finna den gemensamma vägen framåt.

Det verkar som om just möjlighet till gemenskap är vad 6000 samhällsterrorister i Malmö till varje pris ville förhindra igår.

Varje pris? Inte riktigt. Ditt pris – i den mån du, käre läsare, betalar skatt i vårt land. För om du är laglydig, arbetar hårt och betalar skatt som en mönstermedborgare, har just du fått betala priset för gårdagens samhällsomstörtande aktioner.

Terroraktioner mot våra poliser. Polisen fick uppenbarligen order om att ta det väldigt försiktigt, att inte ”provocera” våldsverkarna genom att reagera ens när de blev attackerade. Polisens enda aktion tycks ha varit att slå på sina sirener och köra fram ett antal polisbussar några tiotal meter efter att attackerna hade pågått ett bra tag. Enligt uppgift omhändertog polisen uppemot ett hundratal våldsverkare under kravallerna.

Det var igår. Imorgon är det kanske inte poliserna som är målet. Imorgon är det kanske civila medborgare som är målet.

Förhoppningsvis kommer polisen då att få order om att vara betydligt mer aktiva.

Efter matchen minglade jag med några av de svenska tennisfansen, unga entusiaster i 20-25-års ålder. De var oerhört besvikna över Sveriges förlust. Visserligen är jag ingen Björn Borg men så mycket tennis kan jag att jag tyckte mig förstå att Sverige faktiskt vann matchen igår. ”Jo matchen alltså, den vann vi. Men vi förlorade allt annat”, sade en ung vältränad kille med färsk solbränna. Han skakade på huvudet och pekade på barrikaderna, raderna av polisfordon, de hundratals kravallutrustade poliserna, och de dussintals och åter dussintals civila ordningsvakterna som ständigt bevakade anläggningen. ”Är detta en vinst?” frågade han. ”Sverige förlorade stort. Tennisen förlorade stort. Och den här djävla stan är körd, aldrig mer att jag sätter min fot här.”

En funktionär som stod alldeles i närheten nickade instämmande. Poliserna inom hörhåll såg mest ut att vilja åka hem till sina familjer i Borås, Alingsås, Ystad, Stockholm. Några kom säkert också från Malmö. Dem tycker man idag kanske mest synd om. Det är aldrig roligt när ens hemstad sågas i den allmänna opinionen.

Men det är svårt att prata om seger idag.

Hur kunde Sverige lida ett sådant nederlag? Svaret står att finnas hos dem som eldade på pöbeln timmen innan: Lars Ohly och Pehr Gahrton som höll brandtal som slutade i – om inte bränder så åtminstone flera försök till att sätta Malmö i brand.

Mänskliga orättigheter i Malmö och Nairobi

Två kenyanska aktivister för mänskliga rättigheter dödas på öppen gata, och det möts av tystnad i Sverige.

Några judar från Israel kommer till Malmö för att spela tennis, och 10 000 demonstranter till förmån för ”mänskliga rättigheter” samlas för att störa den anrika Davis Cupturneringen. Uteblivna biljettintäkter i en svår kristid samt mångmiljonkostnader för polisens 1000-manna insats tycker Malmös rödbrune starke man Ilmar Reepalu är bara trevligt.

De kenyanska aktivister Oscar Kamau Kingara och John Paul Oulo sköts från nära håll i Nairobi någon kilometer från presidentpalatset. De två hade tidigare försett FNs rapporteur för mänskliga rättigheter med värdefull information om polisbrutalitet och andra brott mot de mänskliga rättigheterna i Kenya.

När detta skrivs på fredagskvällen finns inget om detta i de svenska medierna. Inget från Svenska Amnesty, Svenska Röda korset, Diakonia, Svenska kyrkan. Inget från TT. Inte ett ord från de hundratals och tusentals människor som medan detta skrivs strömmar till Malmö för att demonstrera sitt stöd för mänskliga rättigheter.

En sanning med modifikation: stöd för enbart palestinska arabers mänskliga rättigheter.

En sanning med ytterligare modifikation: stöd för enbart palestinska terroristers mänskliga rättigheter.

För genom att förhindra judar från att spela tennis i Malmö anser de att de demonstrerar sitt stöd för mänskliga rättigheter.

De visar inget intresse av att visa sitt stöd för hundratusentals israeliska barn som under åtta års tid har sett fler än 10 000 missiler regnar ner på deras dagis, skolor, hem, bussar, lekplatser.

När blev de mänskliga rättigheterna föremål för selektiv behandling?

Det vore fel att påstå att dessa rättighetsanhängare är mindre intresserade av de mänskliga rättigheterna i Kenya.

För sanningen är att de inte är ett dugg intresserade av de mänskliga rättigheterna i Kenya.

Därför är alla tidningslänkar nedan till utländska tidningar: i Sverige är afrikanska mänskliga rättigheter inte intressanta.

Enbart palestinska mänskliga rättigheter är intressanta – när de kan användas som verktyg, ja vapen, mot den judiska staten.

Medan det gamla Kenya fortsätter som alltid: fullständigt ignorerat. Vad är ett par döda afrikaner när man har judar i sikte?

Not the cause

Sir-- 'Piecing the jigsaw' ( Al-Ahram Weekly, 26 February-4 March) was a revealing and disturbing piece of analysis. Not because the article was in any way incorrect but rather because it was so very correct. The bombing at the Al-Hussein Mosque was an atrocious act of terrorism. That anyone could link the killing of French tourists and maiming dozens of other civilians to events in the Gaza Strip is ludicrous. Exactly 2,920 days of Gaza rockets fired at civilians in Israel, followed by 21 days of Israeli retaliation to put a stop to the terror emanating from Gaza, has no bearing whatsoever on events in Egypt. This was terror on Egyptian soil with a very specific domestic agenda of political subversion in Egypt. Tenuous links to events abroad are nonsensical, a convenient way of deflecting attention away from the real aim.

What isn't nonsensical, however, is the way such acts and such thought processes are finding their way far beyond the borders of Gaza, Egypt and the Middle East.

The Swedish cities of Malmö and Södertälje were recently rocked by Islamist/left-wing violence claiming inspiration from the Hamas war against Israel and Israel's response. Battles with the police, massive demonstrations against the presence of Jews guilty of the crime of playing tennis, shops being blown up and torched and schools being shut by the police to protect the children. All in the name of Islamist and left-wing "dissatisfaction" with events in Gaza.

When enough is enough, you have to say so. Hopefully Egypt will be firm in saying "enough" and will deal with its problem, and that Sweden will do exactly the same. Firmly.

Artikeln 'Piecing the jigsaw' (Att lägga pusslet) (Al-Ahram Weekly, 26 februari-4 mars) var en avslöjande och oroväckande analys. Inte för att artikeln på något sätt var felaktig utan just för att den hade så väldigt rätt i så mycket. Bombningen av Al-Husseinmoskén var ett fruktansvärt illdåd, ett terrordåd. Att det finns människor som länkar samman dödandet av franska turister samt lemlästning av dussintals andra civila till händelser i Gazaremsan övergår förståndet och är en logisk absurditet. 2920 dagars missilskjutning från Gazaremsan mot civila i Israel, åtföljd av 21 dagar av israeliskt svar för att sätta stopp för beskjutningen från Gaza, har ingen som helst koppling till händelser i Egypten. Detta var terror på egyptisk mark med en mycket specifik inhemsk egyptisk dagordning – politiskt sabotage mot det suveräna landet Egypten. Artificiella kopplingar till händelser utomlands är nonsens, ett behändigt sätt att avleda uppmärksamhet bort från det verkliga målet.

Det som inte är nonsens, däremot, är det sätt på vilket sådana gärningar och tankeprocesser i allt större utsträckning numera exporteras långt bortom Gazas, Egyptens och Mellanösterns gränser.

De svenska städerna Malmö och Södertälje har nyligen skakats av våld och kravaller signerade islamister/vänsterradikaler i skön förening. De åberopar Hamas krig mot Israel samt Israels svarsaktioner som inspirationskälla. Regelrätta krig mot polisen, massiva demonstrationer mot att judar från Israel tillåtas komma in i Sverige för att spela tennis, snabbköp som brandhärjas och sprängs i luften, och skolor som stängs av polisen av rädsla för barnens säkerhet. Allt för att uttrycka islamisters och vänsteranhängares "missnöje" med händelser i Gaza.

När det har gått för långt måste man faktiskt säga det, högt och tydligt. Förhoppningsvis kommer Egypten att stå fast och säga “Nog!”, och hanterar detta lömska problem på rätt sätt, och att Sverige agerar exakt likadant. Med kraft.

Swedish democracy falters on stony ground in Malmö

Saturday 7 March will see 10,000 rabid anti-democrats streaming into the centre of Malmö in southern Sweden. Their mission: to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the fact that the Swedish government allowed four Jews from Israel to compete in the internationally acclaimed Davis Cup tennis tournament – a tournament that has played host to such stars as Björn Borg, Boris Becker and Andy Murray over the years.

The Swedish government, the Swedish police and the Swedish press all know about the forthcoming demonstration against Israeli Jews being allowed to play tennis in Malmö, where about 30% of the population is Muslim.

The consequences may be devastating for an already fragile Swedish democracy, a democracy that is already rocking on its heels after a synagogue was repeatedly set alight in the town of Trelleborg near Malmö, Jewish cemeteries have been vandalised, and pro-Israel and pro-democracy rallies in Malmö have been attacked by mobs wielding iron bars, rocks, rockets and glass bottles. In the presence of police.

What gives the situation added piquancy is the fact that the protests are against the admission into Sweden of Israeli Jews for the purpose of playing tennis, at the same time as a sizeable portion of the demonstrators are being imported from abroad, mostly from nearby Denmark and northern Germany, and furthermore that many of the demonstrators are in fact not Swedes by birth but recent immigrants from Muslim countries. The situation may thus develop into an international incident on a scale seldom witnessed in this otherwise quiet part of the world.

To this should be added that Malmö’s radical left-wing city council first tried to prevent the Jews from entering the city because they come from Israel, in a direct challenge to the country’s foreign policy as formulated by the centrist government in Stockholm. When that attempt failed, the city council banned all spectators from the match series this weekend, so the matches will be played in an empty stadium.

Malmö city council, which in these dire economic conditions has an even bigger financial deficit than most other Swedish cities, thus prefers to do without the massive earnings generated by ticket sales and in the city’s hotels and restaurants, in order to make its own foreign policy statement. Recently the same city council also banned a 45-strong team of Taekwondo competitors from participating in the Swedish championships because the team consisted of Jews from Israel. Another massive loss of potential earnings. Instead of being held accountable for gross mismanagement in these times of considerable financial difficulty, the city fathers are touting themselves as craftsmen of an alternative Swedish foreign policy – one directed squarely against the Jewish nation.

The demonstrators are of the opinion that Jews from Israel playing tennis on Swedish soil are an insult to Swedish sovereignty, the country’s much-vaunted democratic principles and its upright stance in support of human rights. These concerns over human rights have not resulted in mass demonstrations where such paragons of human rights as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Venezuela, Burma, Cuba, China, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Zimbabwe, Libya, White Russia, the Congo, Sudan or Yemen are concerned. With these countries, Sweden enjoys close and well-established relations in the financial, cultural, sporting, diplomatic and research & development areas.

However, when four Jews from Israel arrive to play tennis, 10,000 demonstrators gather to voice their violent opposition. It certainly puts a new spin on the term “proportionality” – rather like the 1500 murderers that Hamas is insisting Israel free in exchange for one Israeli, Gilad Schalit, who the terror organisation kidnapped 1000 days ago. Fascists, anti-democrats and Islamists seem to love large figures.

And the reason for the uproar? It’s as follows:

After 2920 days of missile attacks on Israel from Gaza, at end December 2008 Israel responded with a military offensive that lasted 21 days.

During the 2920 days of the Palestinian missile onslaught, with more than 10,000 projectiles falling on schools, kindergartens, hospitals, factories and homes in southern Israel, a total of 1177 Israelis died. They were all civilians. The perpetrators came largely from Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Fatah in Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank in the aftermath of Jordan’s illegal occupation of the area from 1948 to 1967.

During the 21 days of the Israeli response, 1100 Palestinian Arabs died, of whom 900 were terrorists with weapons in their hands.

Earlier this week, the world community issued its response to this state of affairs: approximately 4.3 billion dollars to Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This is over and above the 5.4 billion dollars that Fatah on the West Bank received about a year ago. Terror is apparently something to be rewarded, not punished. Rewarded from the pockets of those who dutifully pay their taxes even as they see their already dwindling financial resources being further depleted.

Israel is now under strong international pressure to allow the import of materiel for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, although history has repeatedly shown that construction and infrastructure materiel are used almost exclusively to boost the Hamas terror industry.

Malmö did not want the Gazans to go it alone. Just ahead of the Davis Cup tournament, a huge stockpile of granite cobblestones was delivered to a strategically selected area right outside the front gate of the Baltic Hall stadium in the city centre.

Either the city fathers are particularly stupid, or they are particularly callous. People living nearby started packing their bags to leave the city.

At the very last minute, however, the Health & Safety officer of the Police Union issued an ultimatum: no police would report for duty on Saturday if the granite cobblestone ammunition dump was not removed, down to the very last stone, out of very real concern for the safety and indeed the lives of the Swedish police. What is remarkable, however, is that the police protest made little mention of the need to protect the players or general public, focusing instead on the police who would be attending the event in full riot gear.

It is of course commendable that the stockpile of ammunition has now been removed and the lives of Swedish police officers have thus been protected. The police have the unenviable task of seeing their weekend ruined in a face-off against unruly hooligans who share neither the Swedish love of democracy nor the Swedish concern for human rights. The Swedish police generally do an admirable job against all odds, shoring up Swedish values against an onslaught of radicalism, fascism and Islamism that few people here understand and even fewer appreciate.

But it is nonetheless a bitter indictment on Swedish society that the main concern was for the safety of the police, not the safety of the general public. Or the four Jews who would be playing tennis for their country inside the Baltic Hall stadium.

Stenen i Malmö

Till Malmö kommer nu på lördag 10 000 rabiata antidemokrater för att demonstrera mot att några judar släpps in i vårt land för att spela tennis.

Och den svenska regeringen, den svenska polisen och de svenska medierna vet om det redan i förväg.

Konsekvenserna kan vara förödande för vår sköra demokrati, en demokrati som redan är i gungning sedan det visats att Sveriges Mellanösternpolitik avgörs inte i Rosenbad utan i Rosengård, där Malmös stadsfullmäktige bestämmer vem som släpps in i landet. Man menar att israeler inte bör släppas in i landet, men att antidemokratiska demonstranter bör tillåtas göra det.

Vilket är precis vad som händer, med tillresta fascister och andra huliganer från våra grannländer redan på väg hit. Situationen kan leda till internationella återverkningar på grund av de olika nationaliteterna som det är frågan om.

Demonstranterna anser att judar från Israel som spelar tennis är en skymf mot Sverige.

Eftersom vi i Sverige är mycket måna om att upprätthålla demokratiska värderingar till stöd för mänskliga rättigheter. Förutom när det gäller sådana mönsterländer som Saudiarabien, Turkiet, Venezuela, Burma, Kuba, Kina, Syrien, Iran, Nordkorea, Zimbabwe, Eritrea, Libyen, Vitryssland, Kongo, Sudan, Jemen. Med sådana länder har vi väletablerade finansiella, kulturella, idrottsliga, diplomatiska och vetenskapliga relationer.

Men en jude som kommer från Israel för att spela tennis, och 10 000 demonstranter samlas för att visa sitt vrede.

Varför? På grund av följande:

Efter 2920 dagar av missilattacker från Gaza mot Israel, svarade Israel med en militäroffensiv som varade i 21 dagar.

Under de 2920 dagarna som palestiniernas terrorattacker varade, dödades sammanlagt 1177 israeler, samtliga civila, i terrorattacker utförda av palestinier från Hamas i Gazaremsan och Fatah på Västbanken.

Under de 21 dagarna som Israels svar varade, dödades 1100 palestinier, varav 900 terrorister med vapen i hand.

Igår kom omvärldens svar på detta: 40 miljarder kronor till Hamas i Gazaremsan - detta utöver de 50 miljarderna som Fatah fick på Västbanken för något år sedan. Terror skall uppenbarligen inte beivras, den skall premieras.

Israel är under stark påtryckning att tillåta import av material för uppbyggnad av Gazaremsan, trots att historien upprepade gånger visat att byggnads- och infrastrukturmateriel används uteslutande för raketkonstruktion.

Och Malmö vill inte vara sämre. Lagom till Davis Cup-matchen i tennis nu på lördag mellan Sverige och Israel lades ett stort lager gatsten upp på en strategiskt vald plats intill Baltiska Hallen.

Startskottet till en ny era. Bokstavligen talat.

Men nu har polisens skyddsombud sagt sitt: inga poliser kommer att tjänstgöra om inte gatstenarna tas bort, av rädsla för de skador som kan åsamkas poliserna. Det märkliga är dock att polisens protester inte i första hand gällde skydd av oskyldiga civila, utan skydd av kravallutrustade poliser.

Utmärkt att våra poliser nu är skyddade från mobbens stenregn, men det hade varit hedersamt om spelarnas och andra oskyldiga förbipasserandes välbefinnande hade vägts lika högt i beslutet.

Hur länge är en flykting en flykting?

För ett par dagar sedan avslöjades att ett antal flyktingar räddades från Jemen där de under många år utstått trakassarier, hot och mord.

Tio flyktingar flögs i största hemlighet ut från Jemen och togs emot i sitt nya land.

Flyktingarna är judar. Med dessa tio judar borta ur Jemen finns nu endast 280 judar kvar i landet.

Jemen, varifrån de flydde, är strängt muslimskt. Israel, dit flyktingarna fördes, är övervägande judiskt med en stor minoritet (21%) bestående av muslimer, kristna och bahaiister.

I Israel togs flyktingarna emot som nya medborgare, judar i ett majoritet-judiskt land.

För sex decennier sedan flydde många palestinska araber från en krigszon i det som idag är Västbanken, Gazaremsan och Israel. De flydde till följd av det krig som de arabiska grannstaterna började. Dessa flyktingar flydde till arabiska grannländer som i stort sett var etniskt rensade från judar. Sex decennier senare är dessa människor fortfarande flyktingar – trots att de lever i arabiska länder, har samma religion och talar samma språk.

I Israel finns inga flyktingar. I arabvärlden finns fortfarande flyktingar. Arabiska flyktingar skapade ur ett panarabiskt krig.

Fast det är egentligen inte riktigt sant. Det finns visst flyktingar i Israel.

Muslimska flyktingar från arabiska massakrer mot svarta muslimer i Darfur. Flyktingarna flyr genom det muslimska Sudan och det muslimska Egypten för att söka sin tillflykt i det enda landet där de vet att de är i säkerhet.

Det judiska Israel.

Judiska flyktingar bortjagade från Jemen blir medborgare i Israel, och israelerna betalar integrationskostnaden.

Araber som blir flyktingar till följd av ett arabiskt krig förblir flyktingar mer än 60 år senare, och omvärlden betalar kostnaden via UNRWA för att de inte ska integreras någonstans.

Människoovärdigt så det förslår.

Men här i Sverige riktas ingen uppmärksamhet mot det faktum att judar hotas till livet i arabvärlden just för att de är judar.

Istället är man fullt upptagen med att förhindra judar från att spela tennis i Davis Cupturneringen.
